When you think of fast-charging devices, you probably think of large black bricks that weigh a ton. While they will ensure you don’t run out of power, they’ll weigh you down, especially when traveling. Furthermore, the usually black rectangular box form factor won’t look pleasing on your desk when you’re not charging.

Ugreen saw this need and created the Nexode RG. This small, cute fast charger will power your devices without weighing you down. Furthermore, its design will fit most aesthetics.

So, is this charger worth buying? Or is it just a novelty that’s not worth the hype?

Design, Weight, and Dimensions

The Ugreen Nexode RG Fast Charger comes in a unique aesthetic. The charger features a robotic design with a face that lights up when delivering power. Once you complete charging, the charger will turn off its mouth, indicating your device is fully charged.

The Nexode RG comes in two charging speeds—30W and 65W. The 30W version measures 47 x 47 x 57mm and weighs 59g, while the slightly bigger 65W charger’s dimensions are 45 x 45 x 66mm and weighs 143g. So, despite its charging speed, these bricks won’t weigh you down.

These chargers also have small LED indicators at the front, telling you their status if they’re charging, have completed the charging process, or are on standby.

The charger’s plug is covered by its shoes, allowing it to stand while making it look like a cute little robot. These shoes also have a magnetic base, which is strong enough to hold the smaller 30-watt charger to a whiteboard. Unfortunately, the larger charger is too heavy to stick onto metal surfaces.

Nevertheless, the magnetized shoes help secure the plug covers to a metal surface when using the charger. But since the plug cover isn’t physically connected to the charger, you might forget it, especially if you’re charging your device out of your home.

Also, it’s the shoe-shaped plug covers that make the Ugreen Nexode RG GaN Charger into a “robot” charger. Otherwise, it’s just a tiny, light GaN charger that will power your devices.

While the 65-watt version only comes in black, the 30-watt RG fast charger comes in black or light purple with a ribbon at the back. So, with these options, you can choose a charger that will fit your desktop design.

Available Charging Ports and Charging Speeds

The 30W version only comes with a single 30-watt USB-C port, while the 65-watt charger has three ports—two USB-C ports and one USB-A. The USB-C1 port can go as high as 65 watts, while the USB-C2 port can only reach 30 watts. Finally, the USB-A port delivers up to 22.5 watts.

If you only want to charge one device at a time, the 30-watt version should be enough to recharge most phones in under an hour. But if you plan to power, for instance, a MacBook Air, an iPhone, and an iPad, you would need the 65-watt Nexode RG.

However, you will not get the top charging speed if you use all three ports on the 65-watt charger simultaneously. These are the maximum speeds you’ll get when charging simultaneously.

Heat and Energy Loss

We’ve further tested the chargers to see how much power they deliver and consume. We’ve emptied our devices to ensure they charge at the highest possible rate. That way, we can see how much wattage these chargers actually deliver.

We first started with the 30-watt Nexode RG charger. The M1 MacBook Air used 28 watts according to our USB-C cable. We then checked our smart plug, which showed a 34.4-watt consumption. That means we were losing about 7 watts to heat—about 20% of the consumed energy.

We then looked at the 65-watt charger’s consumption. This time, we used the same M1 MacBook Air, which drew 45 watts, plus an empty Vivo X90 Pro and an empty 6th-gen iPad, which drew 7.5 watts each.

Given these numbers, the larger RG fast charger delivered 60 watts to our devices. However, our smart plug measured 67.2 watts consumption. This means we’re losing about 7 watts to heat and the charger itself, giving it about 90% efficiency.

We’ve also checked the external temperature of both chargers while using all ports for fast charging for 30 minutes. The smaller 30-watt charger hit a maximum of 62.5°C near its USB-C port, while the larger 65-watt charger only reached 58.5°C.

We were surprised by the smaller charger’s higher temperature, which could be because of its smaller size. Nevertheless, these temperatures are still within acceptable range, although the smaller charger could be uncomfortable to hold immediately after fast charging.

Should You Buy the Ugreen Nexode RG Fast Charger?

If you don’t care about aesthetics and only want the smallest, most portable charger, you’re better off going for the Ugreen Nexode 30W or 65W GaN chargers. But if you want a unique charger to place on your desk, you can’t go wrong with the Nexode RG Fast Chargers.

They’re light and portable, charge your devices quickly, and you can securely store the smaller charger on any ferromagnetic surface. Let’s not forget that they make cute, quirky faces that tell you their charging status.

Best of all, the ordinary charging brick and these cute robot chargers cost almost the same. The 65-watt Ugreen Nexode GaN fast charger and the RG Fast Charger are priced the same, while the 30W Nexode RG only has a $6 premium over the regular version.

So, if you’re tired of plain, black-and-white bricks on your desk, power brick, and electronics bag, you can’t go wrong with Ugreen’s unique take on fast chargers.
